Lars and Ted Samuelson started Samuelsons' Drug February 1, 1946. The
Drug Store in Starbuck had been on the same corner in Starbuck for 46 years.
Now in the same location for over 100 years.
A new front was added in 1957 with emphasis on Rexall (orange &
blue). For many years the store proudly sold the Rexall brand with 1¢
sales twice a year. When Rexall went out of business other affiliations were
tried but none matched the Rexall brand.
In the early 60's a cement block building was built around three
sheds on the back of the building. The floor of one of the sheds is still
outlined in the floor of the back room.
The fire in 1965 necesitated removal of the sheds. The pharmacy was
moved to its present location in one of the sheds. It really is outside the
original 1900 building.
In 1973, Opdahl's building was gotten and the store was expanded into
that building, providing twice as much space for merchandise.
John joined as a pharmasist after 10 years working at St. Francis
Hospital in Breckenridge, MN. Donald started in 1984. All the children of the
families have worked at the drug store over the years.
The computer came in 1987 and promised to eliminate paperwork. It
made it possible to follow the use of drugs and instant submission of insurance
claims.
Samuelsons' celebrated the 50 year aniversary in February 1996, with
most of the past employees and past and current owners.

(August 5, 1965) "Fire Causes Extensive Damage
to Drug Store" |
|
Starbuck Times
A smoldering fire in the stockroom of Samuelsons' Drug Store which
was discovered a few minutes after 11:00 o'clock Monday morning caused damage
to the building and merchandise stock amounting to several thousands of
dollars. Origin of the fire is undetermined.
The center of the fire seemed to be in the ceiling of the stockroom
at the rear of the one-story building. Firemen had difficulty in locating the
blaze, as flames never broke through the roof. three hose lines were used, and
nearly an hour was required to get the fire completely
extinguished. |
 |
|
Although the damage to the merchandise stock in the store was held to
a minimum by the use of a smoke extractor by the Starbuck Fire Department, most
of the merchandise on the shelves was slightly discolored or stained by smoke.
Contents of the stock room were almost a total loss.
Pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and other merchandise in bottles and
closed containers was undamaged, but prescription bottles and boxes are
scarcely usable because of smoke odor, Proprietor L. M. Samuelson
said.
Extensive damage was done to the building, resulting from both flames
and water. The roof of the stock room will have to be rebuilt, as well as part
of the ceiling in the store. Water in the attic penetrated the loose insulation
and Nu-Wood ceiling in the places, and some of the ceiling tile may have to be
replaced or covered.
In order to get ride of the merchandise stock before repairs are
started, Mr. Samuelson yesterday announced a fire sale, starting
immediately... |
