 Glacial Hills Elementary School
In one way or another, school policies took up a majority of last Monday’s Glacial Hills Elementary School Board meeting. Whether that be scheduling a special meeting to discuss the list of policies in need of being passed, hearing of the policies needed by the Minnesota Department of Education, or simply discussing the various intricacies of the policies themselves.
One policy in particular, the student attendance policy, drew the most discussion when several of the board members questioned what, if any, discipline should be taken against students who are habitually tardy.
While most on the board agreed some action should be taken, what
that discipline should be wasn’t an easy solution. One suggestion made
was after the seventh unexcused tardy the student would accrue an
unexcused absence. However, using the current reporting system the
school does, changing over unexcused tardies to absences wouldn’t be
possible. The board also discussed whether or not it was fair to count
a student as absent for a day they were actually in school. After
discussing other ideas such as detention, both during the lunch hour
and after school, the board decided to discuss the matter further at an
upcoming meeting.
In addition to the student attendance policy, the board passed the
student discipline policy as well as scheduled a special meeting on
April 14 at 6:30 p.m. to further address and discuss more school
policies.
Earlier in the meeting, School Director Dyanne Parsons noted the
Minnesota Department of Education needed several policies from Glacial
Hills Elementary School. Some of the policies requested include:
Harassment and Violence Policy, Hazing Policy, 504 Grievance Policy,
Title IX Procedure, Inclusion Education Plan. In addition the school
also needs a Health and Wellness Policy and a brief MCA Testing Policy.
Some of these policies have yet to be passed and Parsons stated she
was informed the board could set a goal for completion of these
policies and continue to pass one or two policies a month until they
have all been completed.
